Some of Our Favorite ONLINE Places to Source Clean Food:
- *Azure Standard – Once-a-month, online, organic grocery delivery to a local drop off location. They sell bulk flours, alternative grains, baking goods, spices, fresh produce, frozen produce, meat, dairy, animal feed, etc. (note: you don’t have to buy everything in bulk though, many things are grocery store sized as well). Great prices, less packaging waste, mostly USA grown/raised items, and better farming practices! Plus, more variety than you may get at a regular grocery store. If we had to limit ourselves to purchasing food from only one place, it would be Azure. Click here to see one of our favorite products from here!
- Seven Sons Farm – We like to purchase meat from this Indiana farm. So many awesome things about Seven Sons, from their biblical practices in raising animals and farming, to their transparency about each process on their farm. They have a pretty active Instagram page, and their emails are very informative. You can order online, and your products get shipped right to your door! Depending on where you live, this may also include their dairy and eggs products, too! Click here to see their offerings.
- *Misfits Market – This online market sells organic produce and grocery items at a discounted price, also shipped right to your door. This is a good option if organic produce on a budget is your main goal. In our experience, produce from here often still comes from many miles away (items are frequently from Mexico) and may not truly be in season, so keep that in mind if you choose to shop here. Click here to see what is at the “market” this week and get $15 off your first order!
- Thrive Market – This online membership-based market specializes in pantry items like you would find in the center isles of a grocery store. They also have frozen meat, supplements, and beauty supplies. Thrive Market may be a great solution for you if you do not have a local grocery store with organic shelf-stable items! They sell products under their own brand, as well as stock a wide variety of name brand organic and health food products. You can ship your groceries right to your door and even select certain things on subscription so that you never run out. Click here to see what is available!
Some of Our Favorite IN PERSON / LOCAL Places to Source Clean Food:
This is in addition to what you may be able to find at traditional grocery stores. Many grocery stores like Kroger and Costco sell organic and non-GMO products. Get in the habit of reading ingredient labels for everything (even organic items!) and perhaps keep in your wallet a list of the ingredients or possible GM crops you are trying to avoid.
- Farmers Markets – Here’s a link to Louisville’s list: https://louisvilleky.gov/government/sustainability/local-food-and-farmers-markets. Our two favorite farmers markets are Douglass Loop and St. Matthews. **Please note that just because something is sold at a farmers market does not mean it is “clean,” nor does it guarantee that the animals raised for meat were raised in a humane and thoughtful way. Farmers market vendors may still use GMO crops, spray pesticides, use chemical fertilizers, keep their animals mostly indoors as opposed to out in pastures, etc. Be sure to ask questions if a vendor doesn’t have information about their farming practices/ingredients displayed.
- Whole Foods – Yes, there are plenty of overpriced items here that you can also find at Kroger. We have a pretty good idea of the pricing of things, though, so we only buy what we believe is a good deal. Whole Foods fills in the gaps for us during the off season of farmers markets and carries some shelf-stable goods we can’t find locally made (e.g. applesauce). In addition, ours carries locally produced milk (Greenfield Farms and J.D. milk are two good options). Recently, we have been starting our grocery shopping at Whole Foods and then supplementing with the other stores we mention if we want to find a better deal or more mainstream health foods.
- Rainbow Blossom – Rainbow Blossom’s natural food markets are located across Louisville and surrounding areas. Our favorite location is the St. Matthew’s market off of Lexington Road (it seems to have the biggest selection of food offerings). Rainbow Blossom’s markets are great places to find local dairy, meat, and produce. It is so rewarding when we can make it a two-for-one purchase by supporting a local farmer AND a local business!
- Elmwood Stock Farm – A farm in Georgetown, KY with organic offerings that include eggs, meats (pork, beef, chicken, and turkey), fruits, vegetables and pantry items. We have taken a tour here and love the education this farm gives their customers! We have also participated in their CSA (community supported agriculture) programs over the years. Click here to check out their farm website.
- Rootbound Farm – A farm in Crestwood, KY with organic offerings including fruits and veggies, lamb, and chicken. We have found their veggie prices to be really good! Click here to check out their farm website.
- Harmony Fields Farm – A farm in Shelbyville, KY with organic offerings including vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers. This couple is the sweetest! Definitely stop by their stand at the St. Matthews farmers market if you ever visit. Click here to check out their farm website.
- On Tapp Dairy – A farm in Springfield, KY with organic farming practices and 100% grass-fed offerings including beef, chicken, pork, lamb, turkey, eggs, and low-temp pasteurized + non-homogenized milk. (Raw milk herd shares are also available!) Click here to check out their farm website. Click here to check out their Instagram page.
