We currently have a chihuahua (born in 2018). This page contains our dog recommendations based on our experience with our current dog, as well as the three dogs we had prior to him. Please keep in mind that your dog’s health needs, temperament, outdoor access, etc. may affect what products best suit him or her!

Dog Stuff
- Leashes and collars – Organic cotton and hemp options from The Good Dog Company. (We have gotten so much use out of the clip feature on some of the leashes!) Click here to check out this shop.
- Collar tags – Stainless steel CollarTags from Boomerang Tags. Click here to check out this shop.
- Toys
- Rope tugging toy – Tug-a-hemp from From the Field Pet (good for non-shredders like Duke).
- Durable rubber toys – Kong Extreme (good for extreme shredders).
- What about dog beds? If you have a non-shredder and are crafty, you might consider sewing your own dog bed using materials from a store like Organic Cotton Plus. A store-bought option that has piqued our interest (but that we have not tried ourselves) is one of these organic cotton dog beds.
Dog Food
A few better choice dog foods we have purchased before:
- Castor and Pollux Organix dry dog food
- Tender and True organic dry dog food
- The Honest Kitchen freeze dried dog food and dry dog food
We are considering switching our dog to a raw food diet and will update this page if we find success with it!
Book and Training Recommendations
- Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats, 4th Edition (Amazon link here) – This is an amazing book for educating yourself on the cornerstones of dog and cat health. The book provides the education piece, as well as offers natural solutions to regaining and maintaining canine and feline health. (This includes nontoxic, holistic solutions for heartworm prevention and flea/tick prevention!) We have seen this book sold as low as $5 for a used copy. If you have a dog or cat, this is a must read!!
- The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete – While we do not agree with the entire contents of the book, there is a lot of great information that can help set you up for success in looking for a puppy and in raising an obedient dog.
- Future reads: Training Guide by The Everyday Dog
